Welcome to our weekly blog about DoF members.
We hope that these blogs will entertain you as well as help you in getting to know our members and DoF better.
We asked Canton 15 standard questions from our
Meet the Member blog questionnaire
and then we gave chance to our members to ask 5 specific questions.
Hi I'm Canton. I am DoF member in North America, but I'm actually Australian. I've been in DoF for a few months now, and it's been an excellent vibe.
Favorite Quotes/Lines: "The challenge of modernity is to live without illusions and without becoming disillusioned." - Antonio Gramsci
1. How and why did you join DoF? I joined DoF because many of my favourite people in the community were either in DoF or in the process of joining it. In terms of the “how”: I applied.
2. Favorite moment(s) in DoF? The finals for NABB (our American Bannerlord tournament) ended up being DoF1 vs DoF2. I thought that was neat. Otherwise, Bannerlord has been dead, and I have been quite inactive, so I can’t say I’ve been making too many memories.
3. Favorite book? My favourite book would probably be Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. His writing is profound, and it changed my worldview. A close second would be How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. That book is great at explaining how to be a better, more thoughtful person.
4. Favorite movies and tv shows? I’m a big fan of Goodfellas, 12 Monkeys, and The Departed. My favourite TV shows would probably be Hannibal (not season 3, though–that sucked), Dexter, and Peaky Blinders.
5. Favorite music? I don’t really listen to music anymore. When I do, it tends to be folk music from around the world. Right now, I’ve been playing Rolando Alarcon on repeat. His collection of songs from the Spanish Civil War are lovely.
6. Favorite food and drink? My favourite food is ramen, no contest. My favourite drink would be water, coffee, or gin, depending on the situation.
7. Favorite color? Light grey.
8. Favorite time of the year? Autumn.
9. Are you sport or esports fan and if so what are your favorite sports and teams? Not really, lol.
10. Do you have any pets? Yes, I have a pet miniature schnauzer. He’s pretty cool.
11. Place you would love to travel to? I would love to visit Turkey.
12. Most inspiring historical figure? My pick would be Thomas Sankara. He accomplished more in four years than most leaders could do in a hundred.
13. Favorite games? I’m a big fan of the Anno games, I like some Paradox Titles (EU4, CK2/3), and I also enjoy Battle Brothers.
14. Describe your playing style? I usually just vibe out. Most games I play, I worry about enjoying the experience and roleplaying. Because of that, I tend to make sacrifices to preserve my immersion. In Anno, for example, I create aesthetically pleasing cities and layouts, even if it is liable to bankrupt me.
15. What will be your main class in Bannerlord? I would love to play as a ranger. There’s something very satisfying about landing shots and taking out key targets.
And now we will turn to the specific questions our members had for Canton
16. Snick would like to know How did you get your name? I was playing in an NW regiment, the 22nd Foot, whose tags required that you have use British surname. I googled a list of Welsh surnames, and Canton came up. I thought it sounded nice, and it stuck to this day.
17. White Noise asking: How do you develop this mastery level of humor within your TW forum posts? Sun Tzu once said that “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” As everyone knows, posting is a form of warfare. Therefore, if you know what you’re trying to say, and understand your audience, your posts will be unstoppable.
18. Ruthven is wondering What do you like and dislike about Mount and Blade games? I love Mount and Blade’s combat system. I can’t think of a more engaging pvp experience than a high level duel in Warband. The modding community is amazing, too (check out Ruthven’s epic mod, btw). However, I wish that the series had more opportunities for roleplaying. M&B’s world feels lifeless and there’s little to do other than fight. I’m also not fond of the people Warband attracts; there are too many nazis, but that’s true of any medieval/historical games.
19. Krex's question: Whos your favourite person on the TaleWorlds forums? My favourite person on the forums is Tork. They are the embodiment of the redditor: obnoxious, uninformed, and unaccountably sure of themselves. Whenever I want to irritate people on the forums, I try to do my best Tork impression; they are an inspiration.
20. Beeflip is curious: What are the common misconceptions about Australia and How is it living in America? The misconception about Australia which bothers me the most was crystallized by former New York Times columnist, Bari Weiss. Namely: that Australia has no political problems, and that is because the people are chilled out. Australia has huge problems to do with racism, environmental destruction, and corruption; nobody should look to Australia as a shining beacon of competent governance (or Canada, for that matter).
Living in America is interesting. Besides the absurd amount of bureaucracy and taxes you guys deal with, it’s like any other country, I think.
And now the round of Bonus questions:
Question by JukeBox: Do you write with pencils or pens? I use the pilot G-2 05 (blue colour) for everything. It’s the best pen in the industry.
Question by Ruthven: What's the difference between the scene/community in NA compared to Oceania? I don’t think I’m in a position to compare scenes. I took a hiatus from Warband between 2016 and 2020 because I lived in Singapore, so I know little about recent trends in OCE or NA.
Question by Beeflip: What's your best pickup line? I don’t have any :(
Question by Biladinn: What do you prefer, chocolate milk or milk with chocolate? Chocolate milk all the way.
Question by Beeflip: If you could, would you whole heartedly support and uphold our lord and savior Joe Biden? No.
Thanks to Canton for joining us tonight in this 35th edition of our MMM blog.
Pretty sure I can say it in front of all of our members that it has been great read!
Next week we will, once again, have a surprise guest.
Till then, stay safe and keep the good vibes going as Canton would say.
